Individuals interested in registering for Intermediate and Advanced classes, as well as intensives, must apply.
Our Education Team will review all applications and decide on admission based on the following criteria:
- Previous experience working in Pewabic's Education Studio.
- Prospective students' skill level. These courses are reserved for those who consider themselves intermediate and/or advanced in their ceramic practice.
- Prospective students will be required to select the class or intensive they would like to apply for within the application and briefly describe why they are interested in taking the class or intensive.

FALL 2026 Course DESCRIPTIONS:
Special Course offering for intermediate + Advanced students
Thursday AM Alternative Firings | 8-week course

Session 1: September 4 – October 23
Application Required: This class is offered by application only. Applications are due by Friday, July 24.
Explore experimental firing processes in this intermediate/advanced ceramics course focused on alternative firing techniques outside of the standard Cone 6–Cone 10 Pewabic Education offerings. Through lecture, demonstration, and limited participation, students will be introduced to a variety of non-traditional firing methods and surface outcomes.
Who Can Take This Intensive (Adults 18+)? This course does not cover the making of ceramic work. Students must arrive with work and be able to commit to bringing both bisque-fired and greenware pieces suitable for firing.

Clay Conversations: An Intermediate Handbuilding Demo Series | 7-week course
Fridays | 10:30 AM–1:30 PM

Instructor: Rotating Pewabic and community artist instructors - lineup TBA
Session 2: October 30 – December 11
Explore the creative possibilities of handbuilding through the perspectives of experienced ceramic artists. In this 8-week intermediate series, a different Pewabic or community artist will lead a weekly demonstration, sharing their unique approach to constructing forms, developing ideas, and solving design challenges in clay.
From slab building and coil construction to sculptural techniques, surface development, and assembly methods, each session offers a new opportunity to expand your skills and discover fresh approaches to handbuilt work. Through demonstrations, discussion, and artist insights, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the many ways clay can be shaped, structured, and expressed through handbuilding.
Who Should Take This Class (Adults 18+)? This series is intended for intermediate students with prior handbuilding experience who are ready to deepen their practice through artist-led exploration and experimentation.
Demo series reserved for intermediate + Advanced students
Clay Conversations: An Intermediate Wheel Demo Series | 7-week course
Saturdays | 10:30 AM–1:30 PM

Session 2: October 31 – December 12
Join us for a 7-week exploration of wheel throwing through the eyes and hands of working ceramic artists. Each week, a different Pewabic or community artist will lead a demonstration, sharing their unique approach to form, technique, process, and problem-solving at the wheel.
From refining throwing skills and altering forms to surface considerations and finishing techniques, participants will gain insight into a wide range of methods and artistic perspectives.
Designed for intermediate wheel throwers, this series offers a rare opportunity to learn from multiple makers, ask questions, exchange ideas, and expand your ceramic practice through observation, discussion, and inspiration. Each session is a conversation in clay—highlighting the many paths artists take from a lump of clay to a finished piece.
Who Should Take This Class (Adults 18+)? This series is intended for intermediate wheel students with prior experience who are looking to expand their practice through artist demonstrations and conceptual exploration.
