As the iron particles interact with this semi-gloss white glaze surface,  delicate brown specks form. These beautiful, dappled spots add a warm earthiness to this glaze and create an effect similar to the high contrast “eyes” that dapple the paper-like white bark of a Michigan birch tree — inspiring the glaze’s name, Birch. White or Paper Birch trees are the most common variety found throughout the state of Michigan.
